PROFILE
Prof. Dr. Georgios Mentis, born in Athens in 1963, studied law at the Athens University (1981-1985) and graduated with top honours. With a help of a scholarship by the german state of Lower Saxony and the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung he pursued post graduate studies, on the subjects of civil, commercial and civil procedural law, at the Universities of Hamburg and Hannover; at the latter he did his thesis on: “Schanken prozessualer Klauseln in AGB” (The limits of procedural terms in the standard contract terms: arbitration clause, choice of jurisdiction clause etc). In 1993 he became a doctor in law. A year later his thesis was published by Germany’s law publisher, “Nomos Verlag” and since then is being mentioned in all major german legal books on “Allgemeine Geschäftsbedingungen”. In Greece, besides a number of articles, comments on court decisions and studies on the matter of his interest (unfair terms, product liability, energy law, banking law etc.), he has authored one book on “Unfair contract terms in consumer and business contracts”, published in 2000 (second fully revised edition, 2020). He has acted as member in the Committee of the Ministry of Development for the reform of the rules of the unfair competition and of the law of agency. He has participated in many scientific conferences in Greece and in other countries in his field of knowledge. In 1999, he was invited by the European Commission to be a delegate at the conference on the law of unfair contract terms in Europe, organized in Bruxelles. He also gave lectures on various topics, in Law Schools of Jena (2015), Tübingen (2013, 2018), Hanover (2011), Vienna (2010/2017, 2019, 2021, 2024) and Freiburg i.Br. (2003, 2007). In 2005 he published his third book “Apparent authority” (“Anscheinsvollmacht”) in Greek language and in 2012 he published his book concerning the “Restschuldbefreiung” (Debt-discharge) according to Civil Law and Insolvency Law. In 2013 he was invited by the European University in Florence (by Prof. Dr. Micklitz) to prepare and present a case-study concerning the over-indebtedness in Greece. His contribution was published in the book of Micklitz/Domurath “Consumer Debt and Social Exclusion in Europe”. In May 2014 he was invited by the University of Konstanz to speak about the haircut of Greek state bonds in a “Tagung zur Ent-Nationalisierung des Bankwesens”. Since 2006 Georgios Mentis is Professor of Civil Law at the Law School of the Athens University. He teaches Contract Law, Property Law, Banking Law, Consumer Law, Environmental Law, Legal Methodology.
Besides his activity as a Professor he is attorney at law before the Supreme Court. He is a permanent legal consultant and member of the Board of Directors in several greek companies as well as german companies with business activities in Greece. He is taking part as a legal consultant or arbitrator in several international arbitrations in different various commercial matters. He is member of several NGO’s in the field of environmental protection. He lives in Athens, he is married and has two daughters
