LLM IN INTERNATIONAL & EUROPEAN LAW - GUEST LECTURE BY CAPT. PANAGIOTIS SERGIS AND DR EFTHYMIOS PAPASTAVRIDIS - TUESDAY 20 DECEMBER 2022, 17.00-19.00 PM

We are delighted to announce that on Tuesday 20 December 2022, 17.00-19.00 pm, Capt. Panagiotis Sergis and Dr. Efthymios Papastavridis will give a guest lecture on “The law of naval warfare” for the course “International Humanitarian Law” in the context of the 2022/23 LL.M. in International & European Law. The lecture will take place at 47 Akadimias Str., 3rd floor, AthensPIL Room.

Capt. Panagiotis Sergis HN graduated from the Hellenic Naval Academy in 1995 and since then has served onboard various units of the Hellenic fleet as well as the HNGS. He holds a law degree from the University of Athens (2002), a Law and Legislation Master (LLM) from the UoL (2004) and from the LSE (2005) and an MSc in the field of International Relations, from the Panteion University, Athens (2008). He lectures on international law of the sea at the Hellenic Naval Academy.

 

Dr Efthymios (Akis) Papastavridis is a Researcher and Part-time Lecturer at the Faculty of Law of University of Oxford, and Oxford Martin Fellow at the Oxford Martin School, University of Oxford since April 2016.Dr Papastavidis is also Research Fellow at the Athens Public International Law Center, University of Athens, and Teaching Associate at the Faculty of Law, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.In addition, he works as Research Fellow at the Academy of Athens, Bureau of International Relations, under the supervision of Professor Emmanuel Roucounas, since 2010.

He was formerly Expert Counsellor on Public International Law at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Greece (2016-2019); Part-time Lecturer at the Faculty of Law, Democritus University of Thrace (2010-2016) and Post-doctoral Fellow at the Faculty of Law, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (2012-2015).Dr. Papastavridis has read law at National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and University College London. In 2009 he was awarded a PhD in Public International Law from University College London. 

He has taught public international law at various Universities in Greece and abroad; he has consulted international organizations and agencies, including the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the UNHCR, on international law of the sea matters, and is currently consulting the UNODC and the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (FRONTEX). In 2012 Dr Papastavridis was the Director of the Centre for Research Studies of The Hague Academy of International Law.

Dr Papastavridis is the author of three monographs, including The Use of Force in Afghanistan under International Law (Athens 2004), Interception of Vessels on the High Seas (Hart Publishing, 2013), The Protection of Shipping from Transnational Organized Crime (Athens, 2015); co-author of Public International Law Concentrate (Oxford University Press, 2013); editor of two collected volumes; and author of several chapters in books and numerous articles. He has recently signed a contract with Oxford University Press for a monograph under the Oxford Monographs on International Law Series on ‘Fisheries Enforcement and Marine Biodiversity under International Law’.
