Professor of International Law and former Dean of the Law School of the University of Athens, President of the Marangopoulos Foundation for Human Rights, former President of the European Court of Human Rights, corresponding member of the Academy of Athens, Vice President of the Institute of International Law, member of the Curatorium of the Hague Academy of International Law, member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration (The Hague), former Vice-Chairperson of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, former member of the Management and Executive Board of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights, former Vice President and current member of the National Commission for Human Rights.

He is the author of eight monographs and studies and of more than 120 articles in French, English and Greek, published in a variety of prestigious academic journals in the field of general international law, international human rights law and the law of international organisations. He has also been invited to lecture at various academic institutions, including – but not limited to the: Hague Academy of International Law (1996, 2000, 2005, 2023), Faculty of Law at the University of Oxford (2006), Law School of the University of Paris-I, Panthéon-Sorbonne (1999, 2003), Law School of the University of Paris-II, Panthéon-Assas (1999, 2004, 2011, 2016, 2023), Faculty of Law of the Robert Schuman University of Strasbourg (1998, 2006, 2013-2018), Faculty of Law of the University of Aix-Marseille (2003, 2004), Faculty of Law of the National University of Ireland (Galway, 2005), Law School of the Montesquieu University of Bordeaux (2007, 2008, 2010), Faculty of Law of University College London (UCL) (2012), Faculty of Law of Saint Louis University of Brussels (2016), Faculty of Law of Leiden University (2017), Sciences Po, Paris (2018), Humboldt University, Berlin, (2019), Sapienza University, Rome (2024), etc.

Grand Commander of the Order of the Saviour of the Hellenic Republic, Officier de la Légion d’honneur of the French Republic, Doctor honoris causa of the University of Paris-II (Panthéon-Assas) and of the University of Galatsi (Romania).
