The Law School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens proudly announces the outstanding success of its undergraduate student team in the global rounds of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, which took place in Washington, United States of America, from March 28 to April 4, 2026.

This competition, with a history of 67 years, is the oldest, largest, and most prestigious international moot court competition in the field of Public International Law, attracting hundreds of universities from around the world. The Athens Law School has consistently participated with great success, achieving notable distinctions over time.

This year’s achievement began at the national stage of the competition, where the team won the title of National Champion, securing qualification for the international rounds. The team then represented the University with distinction at the global level, ranking among the 173 universities that advanced to the international rounds.

After a week of highly demanding and high-level rounds, the team ranked 6th worldwide for its performance in the written submissions and was awarded the Alona M. Evans Award, in recognition of the exceptionally high scores received for its written memorials. The team outperformed leading international universities, including prominent english-speaking institutions such as Harvard University and the University of Oxford. This achievement represents one of the highest rankings ever attained by the NKUA Law School in this competition and ranks among the most significant Greek distinctions in the institution.

The team consisted of students Victoria Arvanitaki, Thrasivoulos-Christos (Akis) Kosmidis, Aphrodite Charitonidou, Georgios Papaioannou, and Filaretos Loukoutos, who demonstrated exceptional dedication, academic excellence, and scholarly rigor throughout their preparation and participation.

The team’s preparation, for both the national and international stages, was conducted under the academic supervision of Professor of International Law Maria Gavouneli and Assistant Professor of International Law Efthymios Papastavridis, with the contribution of Efpraxia Anagnostopoulou (former competitor, postgraduate student in Public International and European Law, and trainee lawyer), Maria Anthi (former competitor and senior law student at Athens Law School), and Styliani Manolitsi (former competitor and trainee lawyer).

During the competition, the team faced top universities worldwide, engaging with complex and contemporary issues of Public International Law. The evaluation was carried out by distinguished legal scholars, judges, and internationally renowned professionals, which adds particular significance to this achievement.

This distinction marks a milestone for the Athens Law School, confirming the high level of education provided and the excellence of its students in the field of Public International Law.
