We are thrilled to announce that the team from the Athens School of Law, representing Europe as the regional champion in the global finals of the International Space Law Moot Court Competition ("Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition"), has secured second place worldwide after a series of outstanding performances! Additionally, team member Chrysi Vorloou was awarded the title of Best Oralist in the World! The global finals took place in Milan from October 14-18, 2024, during the 75th International Astronautical Congress (IAC).
Notably, during the European Round of the competition held in Vienna, Austria, from April 8-12, 2024, the Athens School of Law team claimed first place in Europe after a series of exceptional performances. They also won all other awards in the competition: the award for best written memorials and the Best Oralist award, which was again awarded to Chrysi Vorloou.
This marked the first time in a moot court competition that all awards were given to a single team!
The Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition is held annually by the International Institute of Space Law and, on a European level, by the European Centre of Space Law (ECSL). This year’s case concerned legal issues related to the protection of the "dark and quiet" sky, the freedom of scientific research in space, and collisions between space objects. Over 70 universities from around the world participate each year.
The School's remarkable performance this year cements its impressive legacy in this competition. Based on results at both the European and global levels since its first participation in 2011, the Athens School of Law consistently ranks at the top in both Europe and worldwide. This year's team consisted of undergraduate students Chrysi Vorloou, Evangelos Gazis, and Reggina Kourtidi, under the supervision and guidance of Associate Professor and Vice Dean of the Athens School of Law, Georgios Kyriakopoulos, with preparation support from trainee lawyer George Chatzicharalambous and undergraduate student Vera Palialexi, who were members of the 2022 team.
With this prestigious accolade, the School of Law of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) remains at the forefront of this challenging academic moot court competition, which demands exhaustive study and deep understanding of both international public law and space law. This success highlights the exceptional capabilities of Greek students—these accolades are won by different teams each year—demonstrating their passion for academic research and knowledge and their high comparative standing among their global peers. It also attests to the depth and quality of academic education that the Athens School of Law provides to its students.
Congratulations to the entire team for this outstanding achievement!
